One Shot-One Kill
by Farrell Fox

I work in the local hobby shop where a lot of veterans like to come in and buy models of their plane they flew or tank they crewed during WWII, Korea, and Vietnam.

On day a gentleman came in and wanted the biggest scale model of the German Tiger Tank we had, and all thing necessary to build it. I asked him why he was interested in the Tiger tank. He replied, "well, I knocked one out". I was like wow, no way! How did you do that?! He said "well, we were in Bastogne during winter, and I was on a mortar crew. We spotted enemy armor across this big field in the hedge row, and asked our C.P. if we could land a few rounds on them. They said fire away. So we calculated about how far they were and readied the mortar. He said, "our first round was a spotting round, to see where it would land so we could zero in on them. We sent up our spotting round and watched it land right inside the turret of one of the Tiger tanks!"

He said " apparently the crew left the hatches open because they were hot, but our first round witch was our spotting round, went into one of the hatches, and blew the turret to pieces!".

He said they were up for a medal of some sort for destroying a Tiger tank with their mortar, but never received anything.
