Dan Dolly
by Farrell Fox

I met a veteran through a friend. His name is Dan Dolly. He was a combat video photographer that landed on Omaha beach. He told me about his experience on the beach when they landed. He said" I started filming right before I hit the beach, I took cover behind a barrier and shot what I could". He said that one guy ran through his viewer and his body literally blew up in front of him. He said he shot a lot of video of the landings and soldiers getting cut down by machine guns.

After the beach was secure he was shooting video of what was going on when a Lieutenant came up to him and asked him and other photographers for their film, and that he was going to take it aboard the ship leaving for England. The others gave up their film and he gave his post landing reel to the Lt. The officer put all the film into one bag and began to board the ship. As the officer walked up the catwalk he somehow dropped the bag of film into the ocean. None of it was recovered.

He said that for a while he had the beach landing reel. But in the 60s a hippie broke into his garage and stole it along with his camera he took it with. So now he is left with nothing but his stories of what he saw. ( I hate hippies!) Imagine, unseen video of Omaha beach!
